Happy new 2014

Hi there. I’m 6 days late but Happy new year to you all. This year we’ve all made resolutions and I hope the guy up there has made some realistic ones. I look forward to a year full of growth, for me as a cartoonist, for all of you in whatever you do and especially for Ghana. Currently we’re on some Benjamin Button stuff. Once again, happy new year.

Leaders

In the last four days, two ministers of state have expressed their frustration at how the people are expressing their frustrations. Inadvertently, they both said the same thing- if you can’t stand it, leave. (Though they both didn’t exactly say that). I find it amusing the way some of our leaders think…and talk.It’s times like these that the next four years are still four years away.

Just what the doctor ordered

We won! We won!! We beat Egypt by 6 goals to 1. Proudest 90 Ghanaian minutes of my life. That’s the thing about football: it has the power to unite us, to get the whole nation high. It’s the new opium of the masses. Religion, well.. it isn’t opium anymore. In the West, it’s paracetamol; in Ghana, it’s crack. But football and what it does to us….. Yesterday for about 2 hours everybody forgot about the price of fuel, the rising cost of food, rent, water and the shitload of shit (excuse my french) we’re going through as a country. That’s the power of football.

Partisan Denial

The NPP has an interesting history of having the most dramatic and entertaining way of selecting its Flagbearer. Several interestingly overconfident members pay interestingly outrageous amounts of money to contest the race only to realise that most of the delegates aren’t interested in them. It doesn’t get worse than realising you’re the only one to vote for yourself. This time, however, most of the usual suspects have come out to say that they aren’t interested in leading yet, and that they would rather focus on building structures. While I think this is a noble idea, I still wait with bated breath to monitoring another interesting race for the Flagbearer.

Good Man Down

Ghana lost one of her sons in the Westgate mall attack, Prof. Kofi Awoonor. Sad sad sad news indeed. I didn’t know him personally, however it really hurts when a person of talent is taken from the world prematurely. I believe such people who use their talents have the ability to change the world in their own small way, and for them to go like that means their work may not have been finished. May his soul rest in peace.
